Enroll in Affordable Care Act Plans Before the Deadline

The health insurance marketplace for Affordable Care Act plans does not remain open for enrollment throughout the year. Currently, 2014 enrollment closes on March 31st, 2014. The only way you sign up for insurance outside of the enrollment deadline is due to major life changes. Some changes that qualify for an enrollment include having a child, getting married, losing your job, or getting divorced.

If you do not enroll during the open enrollment period, you have to get insurance through another provider or potentially pay a tax penalty for not having insurance coverage in 2014. 2015 enrollment begins on November 15th, 2014, and runs until February 15th, 2015. Small businesses are not bound to the enrollment period and have the option of setting up insurance plans for their employees at any time of the year.

Don’t Miss The Affordable Care Act Open Enrollment Deadline

If you have not yet signed up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, then you still have a little time left. The open enrollment period runs through March 31, 2014, and after that date you are unable to obtain health insurance for the 2014 year. Other deadlines are just for an effective date earlier in the year with this being the final deadline.

The only way that you can get health insurance after this period is if you have a qualifying life event, such as a marriage, death or loss of other coverage. It is important to note that this is the only year that open enrollment goes through the end of March. For 2015, the open enrollment period starts on October 15, 2014 and ends on December 7, 2014.

You may even qualify for a tax subsidy that helps lower the cost of your health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

My Employer’s Plan vs. Obama’s Plan: Which is Right for Me?

Many people are not sure what the Affordable Care Act means for them and their health care coverage. If you are currently insured by your employer, should you keep your coverage or shop on the Marketplace?

In most cases, the insurance you have through your job will be the best deal. Your employer, in most cases, contributes to your premiums. This will not be the case if you buy a policy through Obamacare. However, if the policy you have through your job does not provide enough coverage to be considered a qualifying health plan or if you are paying too much of your income in premiums, you may be able to get a better rate. Here in Texas, you can shop through the national Marketplace website to compare insurance costs and plans.
