Autism Awareness Month

April is National Autism Awareness Month and it is a great time to learn more about this developmental disability. The month of awareness is celebrated around the United States and has plenty of ways to get involved.

National Autism Awareness Month was started in the 1970s as a way to highlight the growing need for concern about autism. It is celebrated in many ways at many different levels in the country. There are special Presidential and Congressional Declarations that are given during the month. At a more local level, there are many online events and activities and local activities through affiliates of the Autism Society. If your community does not offer any special events during National Autism Awareness Month, make your own! There are plenty of ways to get involved with the cause and open partnership opportunities with the Autism Society.

One of the simplest ways to get involved is to place that National Autism Awareness Ribbon on your car, Facebook, or wearing it around town. The ribbon is one of the most recognizable symbols for autism with its unique, colorful puzzle piece design. With one in every 68 children in America diagnosed with autism, showing your support with the ribbon is a great way to educate people about the disability.

If you are looking for an event in your area, AMC theaters partnered up the Autism Society to put on Sensory Friendly Films every month. These events offer unique environments where guests are welcome to sing, walk, dance, or shout along with the movies. Everyone is invited to enjoy this comfortable movie experience every movie.
