The Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival began in 1990, and since then, it has become the largest festival of this kind in the world. Each year, a pool of over 350 contestants enter the three-level hot sauce competition. The three groups divide entrants according to individuals (for homemade sauces), restaurants, and commercial bottlers. Judges are chosen from among the state’s finest chefs.
There is much more to this special event than a hot sauce competition. It serves as a major fund raiser for the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. In 2012, the six hour-long festival collected nearly 15,000 pounds of food and more than $12,000 in donations. Spectators are asked to donate three healthy, non-perishable food items or give a cash donation to the food bank as admission.
Food vendors will have food for purchase, and attendees can listen to live music at the Planet K stage. Attendees can purchase raffle tickets for $5 each for a chance to win one of up to five Sizzling Summer Raffle Packages with a cash value of over $500 each.
The festival takes place on August 25, 2013 from 11 AM to 6 PM at Fiesta Gardens, at 2101 Jesse E. Segovia Street in Austin, TX.
